We have received a response to our letter complaining about DPTI’s plans for Main Road Belair.
Our complaint was about the proposed narrowing of the road to provide a pedestrian crossing without considering the fact that this would squeeze cyclists into the path of cars. Main Road Belair is not a good cycling road, but for people cycling between Belair and Blackwood it is all they have. Fortunately our position received good media coverage.
DPTI’s response sounds hopeful. While we have not seen the new plans, the letter says that Main Road will be widened to allow additional lane width. While the pedestrian refuge will be installed as planned, hopefully this will not longer create a squeeze point for cyclists.
